HSV is more commonly transmitted when there are no visible symptoms or lesions. Within a population of 45 million adolescents and adults, about one out of five become infected. A sexually transmitted disease caused generally by HSV-2 (although HSV-1 can be found at the sexual reproductive organ site), which can result in varied symptoms from redness and irritation to painful lesions.

Risk of women transferring HSV to their unborn is small (most likely when active during later pregnancy stages), but the consequence is severe deformity or demise. Women have a significantly higher risk than men for infection. Over a 20-year period, teens show the most rapid rate of infection.
